KNOWLEDGE BASE

Understand the Art, Not Just the Moves

Everything a student — or a curious visitor — needs to understand JKA Shotokan: where it came from, how the Japanese terms work, and the philosophy underneath the technique.

1868–1922
Karate Leaves Okinawa
Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan schoolteacher trained in the local fighting art of "te," is invited to demonstrate karate in Tokyo. He formally introduces the art to mainland Japan and begins renaming it "karate" — using characters meaning "empty hand."
1936
The Shotokan Dojo Opens
Funakoshi's students build a dedicated dojo in Tokyo, named "Shotokan" after his pen name, "Shoto" (meaning "pine waves"). The style that would come to be known as Shotokan karate takes institutional shape.
1949
The Japan Karate Association is Founded
The JKA is formally established in Tokyo to preserve and standardize Funakoshi's teachings, with Masatoshi Nakayama taking on the role of Chief Instructor after Funakoshi's passing in 1957 — codifying the technical curriculum still used today.
1950s–1970s
Global Expansion
The JKA sends senior instructors abroad as part of its overseas instructor program, spreading standardized Shotokan karate across the world and establishing national and regional federations.
2024–Present
A New Generation Leads JKA World Federation
Following the passing of longtime Chief Instructor Masaaki Ueki, 10th Dan, in July 2024, Oishi Shuseki Shihan, 9th Dan, now leads as Chief Instructor of JKA World Federation — carrying the technical standard forward into the next generation of practitioners worldwide.
Present Day
JKA Philippines — Qatar Chapter
Founded by Sensei Rolando "Omar" Corpuz Ladjahasan, our Doha dojo carries the JKA curriculum forward for the Filipino community and wider Qatar residents, holding to the same grading standards set by JKA Headquarters.

Every class opens and closes in Japanese. Counting to ten — used for repetitions in kihon and kata — is the first thing every new student learns.

KAMAE — Stances

Long, low forward stance with weight loaded toward the front leg — the base for most attacking techniques.
Wide horse-riding stance, weight evenly split, used for lateral power and side techniques.
Weight held mostly on the rear leg, front leg light — a defensive, evasive stance.

UKE — Blocks

Deflects a strike upward and away from the head.
Sweeps an attack from the centerline outward, arm moving in-to-out.
Clears a low attack, typically a kick, sweeping downward across the body.

TSUKI & UCHI — Strikes

A stepping punch thrown with the same-side hand as the forward leg.
A punch thrown with the hand opposite the forward leg — the core scoring technique in kumite.
A strike delivered with the blade edge of an open hand.

GERI — Kicks

A snapping or thrusting kick delivered straight ahead with the ball of the foot.
A kick that travels in an arc, striking with the instep or ball of the foot.
A kick designed as a fast, snapping strike typically aimed at close or vulnerable targets like the ribs or groin.
A kick thrust directly sideways, striking with the blade of the foot.

The Dojo Kun are five precepts recited at the close of every JKA class, attributed to Gichin Funakoshi. They frame karate as a discipline of character before a system of combat.

01
Hitotsu, jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto
Seek Perfection of Character
02
Hitotsu, makoto no michi wo mamoru koto
Be Faithful
03
Hitotsu, doryoku no seishin wo yashinau koto
Endeavour
04
Hitotsu, reigi wo omonzuru koto
Respect Others
05
Hitotsu, kekki no yū wo imashimuru koto
Refrain from violent behaviour

Karate ni sente nashi — "There is no first attack in karate." One of Funakoshi's twenty guiding precepts (Niju Kun), and the philosophical center of JKA training: karate exists for defense and self-mastery, never for provocation.

Rank in JKA Shotokan runs two tracks: kyu grades (colored belts, for students working toward black belt) and dan grades (black belt degrees, for certified practitioners). Belt colors below are the grading system followed at JKA Philippines Qatar Chapter.
